Official Statement from NYSDOT Long Island Regional Director Rich Causin
The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) recognizes the critical role that Merrick Road (State Route 27A) plays in the daily lives of residents and commuters in the Village of Amityville. In response to recent structural assessments and upcoming weather challenges, NYSDOT is taking swift and comprehensive action to restore safe two-way traffic on this vital corridor.
Completion of Structural Reinforcement Work
Following thorough inspections, NYSDOT engineers have confirmed that the Amityville Creek culvert is structurally sound. To enhance its durability and ensure long-term safety, crews have completed reinforcement efforts which included the installation of additional piping and stone fill around the culvert. This important milestone allowed Merrick Road to reopen to two-lane traffic in both directions on Tuesday, October 14, at 5:45 a.m.
Proactive Measures Ahead of Weather Event
In anticipation of a forecasted weather event this weekend, NYSDOT is proactively installing water pumps to manage and control potential excess water flow near the culvert. Additionally, crews will resurface the roadway above the culvert to restore a smooth and safe driving surface for motorists.
Traffic Restrictions and Detours
To facilitate these critical repairs and improvements, Merrick Road will experience temporary closures and traffic adjustments:
- Closure Dates: Both directions of Merrick Road in the vicinity of the culvert will be closed beginning Friday, October 10, at 6 p.m.
- Local Traffic Access: Merrick Road will remain open for local traffic only between State Route 110 and Great Neck Road (County Route 47).
- Westbound Detour: Motorists traveling westbound will be directed onto northbound Great Neck Road, then westbound Dixon Avenue (County Route 2), and finally southbound State Route 110 to re-access Merrick Road.
- Eastbound Detour: Eastbound drivers will detour northbound on State Route 110, eastbound on Dixon Avenue, and southbound on Great Neck Road to reach Merrick Road.
NYSDOT is committed to minimizing disruption and expects to complete all work and fully reopen Merrick Road by Tuesday, October 14, or sooner if conditions allow. However, ongoing construction schedules may be impacted by weather conditions, and updates will be communicated promptly.
Community Engagement and Safety
NYSDOT appreciates the patience and cooperation of the Amityville community and all motorists affected by these necessary improvements. The department remains dedicated to delivering a safe, reliable, and resilient transportation network that supports the quality of life and economic vitality of Long Island.
Safety Reminder: Lives are on the line—please slow down and move over for highway workers to ensure everyone’s safety during construction activities.
