Driving Schools in Queens
Queens offers some of the most varied driving in the city. In a single lesson you might crawl along Roosevelt Avenue under the elevated 7 train in Jackson Heights, change lanes on Queens Boulevard, then merge onto the Long Island Expressway or the Grand Central Parkway. Traffic heading to JFK and LaGuardia airports adds to the mix. Use the listings below to compare dozens of driving schools across the borough.
Steps to a New York license
New York's Green Light Law allows anyone 16 or older to apply for a standard learner permit and driver license, regardless of immigration status. The permit comes first: pass the vision and written knowledge tests at a DMV office, and you can start practicing with a supervising driver who is at least 21. Next is the state's 5-hour Pre-Licensing Course, which covers traffic law, defensive driving techniques and the dangers of alcohol and drugs. Classroom and live virtual versions end with an MV-278 certificate, and you need a valid one, good for a year, to book your road test.
Queens is home to speakers of a great many languages, so ask which languages an instructor can teach in. Also check that the school holds a New York DMV license, whether it can provide a car for road test day, where it picks students up, and what each lesson package includes. Prices differ from school to school, so compare a few before committing.
