Driving Schools in Bronx

Learning to drive in the Bronx means handling narrow side streets lined with parked cars, busy corridors like the Grand Concourse and Fordham Road, and fast merges onto the Cross Bronx and Major Deegan expressways. Lessons with a professional instructor, in a car with a passenger-side brake, let you build those skills before you are on your own. Below you will find dozens of Bronx driving schools to compare side by side.

How the New York licensing process works

Your first stop is a DMV office for a learner permit. New Yorkers can apply at 16 by passing a vision test and a 20-question knowledge test; you need 14 correct answers, including two of the four road-sign questions. Before you are allowed to schedule a road test, the state also requires its Pre-Licensing Course of about five hours, unless you have completed an approved driver education program. Under 18? You must hold the permit for six months and have a parent or guardian certify at least 50 hours of supervised practice, with 15 or more after sunset.

A rule worth knowing here: permit holders may not drive on MTA bridges, which rules out the Throgs Neck, Bronx-Whitestone, Henry Hudson and Robert F. Kennedy bridges until you are licensed.

When comparing schools, confirm the school is licensed by the New York DMV, ask whether its car is available for your road test, and compare lesson packages, since prices vary. It also helps to check which neighborhoods instructors pick up from and whether lessons are offered in Spanish or another language you prefer.
